News: TECTONICA structural exploration project 90% Complete

Wilfredo Méndez, director of TECTONICA Architecture, was invited on March, 2011 to collaborate as architectural designer for a new canopy design as part of a rehabilitation project in the western region of Puerto Rico. The project has been under construction since May, 2011 and presently has achieved the 90% of completion.

For the canopy project Méndez was directly inspired by Robert Le Ricolais “Space Frame” structural theory. Furthermore, the architectural design was adapted to the context bio-tropical parameters as defined by Dr. Pedro Muñiz Rivera, technology specialist from the School of Architecture of the University of Puerto Rico. Some of the design strategies foster to reduce thermal load while increase cross ventilation in order to improve interior comfort zone under the exposed metal roof.

In addition a collection of landscape areas were added to the original building in order to improve the ecological quality of the whole project.
